Davidson-Davie Community College offers unwelcome teachings to high school students
Privilege, ‘Gender Unicorn’ taught as fact to high schoolers enrolled in early college courses
High school students, 15-18 year olds, signed up for early college courses this year at DDCC campus, located in Mocksville, NC, just as they have in years past. One change this year, they could only choose to take 4 or 7 courses, not individual classes.
Many kids were surprised to hear what a Communication professor included at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year.
Providing examples of what privilege is for Christian, white and heterosexual.
A TedxRoma titled ‘Museum of broken relationship: a shelter for exilied loves‘ was shown to the same group of students. This talk features the co-founder of the museum reviewing a few of the pieces in the exhibit. Around the 7:50 minute point you will hear reference to a piece that’s inclusion caused a stir in the European Parliament and a painting featuring a man, with two other men, who was in a ‘very complicated and intricate three-way relationship for years’.
Another course has included the ‘Gender Unicorn’ as part of instruction. The use of this gender mapping concept was presented to students in a Sociology class as fact.
By now most will be familiar with ‘Gender Unicorn’ as it has been used since at least 2016 in many educational institutions. To date, it has not been a concept used by Davie County Schools.

Ultimately, some students decided to walk out and have considered removing themselves from the courses.
Darrin Hartness, President of Davidson-Davie Community College was contacted with a series of questions and he has graciously agreed to answer to the best of his ability. An update will be posted once that conversation occurs.
• Was this curriculum approved specifically for high school students?
• Will students be allowed to drop questionable classes without penalty?
If your family has experienced unexpected courses as part of the 2022-23 school year please let us know!
